5 Types of Roomates You Might Have in Your Freshmen Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

1. Homesick Hannah

If you find yourself with a homesick roommate, you will probably be listening to an excessive amount of phone calls and tears. In some cases, you may rarely see this roommate because they are constantly going home. To help this kind of roommate, try getting them involved in school activities or spending time with them, whether it be a trip to the dining hall or a Thursday night Netflix marathon. These activities will help distract your roommate from missing home. If this fails or your roommate continues to go home constantly, continue to be a person they can turn to for help, but make other friends because you need people to support you too.

2. Messy Madison

If there are piles of dirty clothes all over the floor, dishes that have not been washed in weeks, and food wrappers on every surface, this might be your roommate. If you are an exceptionally clean and organized person, this type of roommate will probably drive you crazy. To deal with a messy roommate, try simply asking them to be a little neater, perhaps suggesting that once a week you will both clean up the room. If all else fails, you can always tape a line in the center of the room, so at least the mess will not be on your side.

3. Partying Paige

If you’re not against a party, partying Paige may seem like a fun roommate at first because she is typically outgoing and will make sure you are entertained for the weekend. However, this type of roommate is not fun when she comes back to your room every weekend either throwing up or with a new boy. At this point, you need to talk to your roommate because you should not have to be cleaning someone else’s vomit off your floor or being replaced by a boy in the room. If this roommate does not work, talk to your RA about your options.

4. Abusive Ashley

This roommate is your worst nightmare. She might be controlling or say things that make you uncomfortable. She may try to manipulate you or say things that make you feel bad about yourself. In extreme cases, she may even physically abuse you. If your current roommate situation is anything like this, talk to your hall director right away and get out immediately. College is already stressful enough; you do not need an abusive or bad roommate on top of it.

5. Best Friend Bethany

Some of you may get exceptionally lucky, and your freshmen roommate turns out to be your best friend. Your room is perfectly coordinated, you study together, get meals together, go on runs together, and so on. Perhaps you will remain best friends throughout your four years at college and into your transition to adulthood and beyond.

Sharing a room with someone for the first time can be a challenge. Whether you are best friends or not, there will be times when you and your roommate will not get along because you are different people coming from varying backgrounds. The important thing is that you learn how to live together peacefully.
