Owlcrate: A Subscription Box Made for Any Avid Reader

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BU chapter.

I wanted to get word out there about one of my favorite subscription boxes: Owlcrate. This boxed is packed lovingly to the brim with a novel and goodies ranging from candles and socks to Funko Pop figures. There are a bunch of different subscription options, including a one-time box, to fit any preference you may have. Personally, I pay monthly for each box and it’s something I look forward to every time I get an e-mail saying it’s shipped. If you’re an avid reader and a fantasy lover, this box is something to look into!

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored article, I just wanted to share one of my favorite things!

This picture is from the November 2016 box. Two books, Heartless by Marissa Meyer and a gorgeous edition of Alice in Wonderland, were included. Also within the box was Alice-themed tea and a metal bookmark, among other items.

I am a HUGE reader – I can get through a book in a few hours, and several in a week. I devour words like they’re candy and dream of spending all my time (and money) in a bookstore. Of course, with school, it makes my obsession a little more difficult. I lack the finances to buy every book out there and have limited time to read with schoolwork. However, that’s part of the reason I love this box! During school, a book a month gives me something to look forward to and supplies enough reading to get me through each month (usually). Sometimes the boxes even have two books! In the August 2017 box a few months back, we were given The Hearts We Sold by Emily Lloyd-Jones and a beautiful edition of Sleepy Hollow. The genre of the books ranges, but they are all YA reads and are usually fantasy. Owlcrate has also recently started giving exclusive covers of novels! I am definitely the type of reader to judge a book by its cover, and owning an exclusive cover makes me extremely gleeful. Even if it’s just the title in a different color, it’s unique to this box! Lastly, the best thing about the novels is that they’re newly released within the respective month of each box. This ensures that you most likely won’t already own the book!

Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia was in the Comic Explosion themed May 2017 box.

Not only are you given at least one book a month, you’re also promised a box full of book-related items. These range from book-themed candles and tea bags to bookmarks to jewelry to socks (we recently got Edgar Allen Poe-ka dot socks) to Funko Pop figures and more! In last month’s box, I received an item that very well may be my favorite goodie received so far: a book sleeve. Think of a sleeve for your laptop, imagine it smaller and in a really cute mermaid pattern. It protects your beloved books from being beaten up when you travel with them and it’s super cute! This item, as well as others you may receive, are over half the price of each box. This just shows how worth the money the box is! Additionally, each box has a different theme. These items fit the theme perfectly, and a lot of the time the themes are related to Disney or Harry Potter. What more could you want?!

I promise you, this box is a fabulous investment. I’ve been receiving it for a little over a year now and it’s something that fills me with joy every time it arrives in the mail. Try it out, and tell me what you think!

Francesca is currently studying human physiology in the beautiful city of Boston. She loves to curl up with a good book or watch a Disney movie any chance she gets.
