Stranger Things Season 2 Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

If you’re like me, then you probably spent all Halloween weekend binge-watching the new season of “Stranger Things”. From Spotify playlists for the characters to a Target clothing line for the show, there was a lot of hype for these new episodes. One thing is for sure: they didn’t disappoint.

The first season was hard to top, but “Stranger Things” season two gave it a run for its money. These new episodes further expanded on the characters and their relationships with one another. Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven, everyone’s favorite psychokinetic kid, not only has much more dialogue in this season but also delves into her history. She even picks up a new catchphrase, which brought some laughs from viewers. “Mouthbreather” was good, but this one is much better.

Millie Bobby Brown’s acting was impeccable. She continues to prove herself as a force to be reckoned with in the acting industry. At just 13 years old, she continues to be the spotlight of every scene she is in. If she doesn’t receive any awards for her acting this season, fans of the show will most certainly cause an uproar.

Another kid that surprised everyone with his amazing acting abilities is Noah Schnapp. Last season, his character Will did not appear on-screen too often, as he was spending most of his time in the Upside Down. In season two, however, Will is present in every episode.

Will struggles to cope with the effects of his time in the Upside Down, getting tested by a series of doctors and dealing with hallucinations of a ‘shadow monster’. Noah Schnapp perfectly portrayed the panicked state his character was in. His panic attacks were so believable they even freaked me out. Time and time again, the kids of “Stranger Things” impress audiences everywhere, proving that they are the heart of the show.

This show has a fair share of heartthrobs, but Steve Harrington is a show stopper. His character development was one of the best parts of the new season, showing a softer side of himself as opposed to his tough-guy exterior in the first season. I won’t give anything too major away for those of you who haven’t watched the season yet, but let’s just say Steve does a lot more babysitting in the new episodes.

A major part of “Stranger Things” season two was the love triangles. Nancy’s conflict between choosing Jonathan or Steve continues in this season, but a couple more pairings are introduced; one of which is brought about by the introduction of a new character, MadMax. She’s a mysterious skater girl from California, and she catches the eyes of Lucas and Dustin.

The introduction of another young girl in the show was an interesting choice, but it mostly just made viewers miss Eleven even more. At least there are a few episodes solely based on Eleven learning more about herself and her history.

Another new character was added to the mix, as well. This season, Joyce got herself a boyfriend. Played by Sean Astin, Bob is arguably the nerdiest character in the show. At least Joyce finally has a someone supporting her. Last season she was the epitome of stressed out. If anyone deserves a break, it’s her.

One of the best aspects of season two was Gaten Matarazzo’s fantastic comedic timing. His character Dustin is the designated comedic relief of the Hawkins boys, so it’s no surprise that his jokes hit the mark every time. The new episodes are filled with hilarious one-liners that are sure to bring laughs no matter how many times you re-watch the season.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch season two, or maybe the show as a whole, I highly recommend it. These episodes have it all: suspense, romance, comedy and some very talented kids. So, take a trip to the grocery store, buy some Eggos and start binge-watching. Trust me, the time will fly by.
