Being a commuter at Rowan, I know all too well the various struggles that are unique to us only. Parking is the top of the list and we all know the struggle of having to leave home a literal hour before our class starts (despite living 10 minutes away) just to gamble with it. We all know the awkward feeling of following someone to their car, just to get their spot.  Been there, done that. I have even rolled down my window and asked people if they were getting ready to leave so I can have their spot. The struggle is too real out there and, at certain peak points in the day, it’s like the Hunger Games.

Parking is just one of the many issues we deal with as commuters. The biggest commonality felt among commuters, however, is often feelings of isolation. For many, going to class, and then straight home is a part of the daily routine for a commuter. It can be easy to feel alone this way. You might struggle to make friends because of the lack of time you spend on campus.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way.

Just because you’re commuter doesn’t mean you can’t feel connected to campus life. Many schools, Rowan included, even have a specific club for commuters. This can be a safe place, a niche, and an opportunity for you to meet and build connections with others who are in the same position as you. Along with this, there are a plethora of other clubs that are available for you as well. Also, once you’re done class, hang out a little! The Student Center is a great place to get a bite to eat and chill. This is another great way to mingle and get connected as well!

While there are many thing that do suck about being a commuter, the whole experience doesn’t have to. Get involved, mingle, and hang out! It’ll help you blow some steam off from the fight you probably just almost got into in the parking lot…
