When you enter college the first thing everyone asks you is, “What’s your major?”. That seems like a simple enough question, but in reality, that question has many other questions attached to it.

What are you good at?

How will you make money doing that?

Are there really any jobs in that market anymore?

I thought I had everything figured out when I proudly stated that I was a journalism major to every friend and family member I came across.

I would specialize in broadcast and this would inevitably lead to me becoming the next Ryan Seacrest. Though as that first year of college passed and I got a few classes under my belt, I quickly came to realize that maybe I didn’t have everything figured out.

Entering into an internship within the music industry, I discovered I had so many different passions and career options I never realized existed. That huge dream I had for 5 years was soon replaced by new dream after new dream.

One of the biggest things I learned in 2017 is that it’s okay to have new dreams. It’s also okay to discover that the dreams you once had belong in the past.

In a time when social media can show a person’s every success in a condensed timeline, it is so easy to get discouraged when you feel like you’re just starting your journey. It is vital to realize that just because someone has known their dreams for years does not make your new dreams any less important.

To anyone that finds themselves trying to find that new dream or thing that they’re passionate about:

“You never know unless you try”

One of the best ways to find out whether you want to do something or not is to go out, explore, and attempt it. You may just find you have dreams that you never dreamed before.

Megan is a second year student at Belmont University, located just outside of downtown Nashville. On any given day you can find her creating a Spotify playlist, jotting down some poetry or searching for a new vintage clothing store. If you go an entire conversation with her and don't hear something about her undying love for Elton John, you didn't talk to her long enough.
