Oprah Winfrey has accomplished a lot and is very well known for many of them, such as being a TV host, actress, producer, and a philanthropist.
Now she is the first black woman to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award during the 75th Golden Globes. For those who watched the Golden Globes, or even scrolled through social media, saw that women wore black in protest of sexual assault. When Oprah was giving her speech, she made it clear to let men know that their time is up for silencing women everywhere. She stated, “we all have lived, too many years in a culture broken by brutally powerful men. For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men, but their time is up.” As not only a woman, but someone who identifies as a feminist, I felt very empowered when she said that. Men have been given everything without having to lift a finger for the most part. Women had to fight hard for rights that we shouldn’t have had to fight for in the first place. Women have made cracks in the glass ceiling, especially recently, and I feel that it won’t be too long until we break through it.
She also sends a message to women everywhere that there will be a day when we won’t have to use ‘Me Too’ again. “I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me Too’ again.”
Women can accomplish some pretty major things when they put their minds to it, and even more when they come together to accomplish the same goal. I’m not really sure why some feel that just because of someone’s gender that they shouldn’t have certain rights or aren’t good enough, but it’s annoying to put it simply. With that being said, Oprah, thank you for empowering young girls and women everywhere.
Here’s to making the future a better place and having women feel like they can accomplish anything.
