If you’re thinking about attending graduate school it’s never too early to start planning. As someone who has been working towards graduate school since my first day of undergraduate, I’ve learned a lot about how to prepare and make your application shine. Here are some tips that I’ve learned along the way!

1. Make Connections With Your Professors

You have an adviser for a reason! As soon as you can, pop into their office hours and introduce yourself. Tell them about your interests within your major and that you’re thinking about graduate school. As somebody who has attended themselves, they’ll be able to provide a lot of insight. Reach out to other professors too! The more you build a relationship with them, the more likely they’ll agree to writing your recommendation letters once grad school applications roll around.

2. Consider an Independent Research Study

Independent research studies or projects are a great way to show graduate schools how passionate and serious you are about your field of study. Additionally, consider presenting your research at a conference or submitting to an undergraduate research journal. Being published will make your application for grad school shine!

3. Visit the Schools You’re Interested In

Speaking with the faculty and getting a tour at the schools you’re looking are just as important for graduate school as they were for undergrad. Make sure you ask about financial aid while you’re there!!!

4. Talk to Current Graduate Students

Talking to faculty is important, but it’s just as important to get the actual students’ perspectives.

5. Take Your Time in Undergrad Seriously

Forget the whole “Cs get degrees” thing; your grades in undergrad are important. Consider studying abroad, being a TA, and taking on leadership roles. These experiences are what will make your application stand out against the others.

And remember to enjoy your time in undergrad! These four years are special. Don’t get too hung up on the future. Stay present and make every moment count! Four years really do fly by.
