How to Have a Journal and Actually Keep Up with It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

I have always wanted to have a journal. I have tried numerous times and it ends up getting lost, forgotten, or left in the bottom of a drawer to never be touched again. Having a journal is a lot of work. It seems so difficult to update it every day, but having interesting things to put in it may be helpful and exciting to keep yours updated. Here are some great things you may want to include:

Dreams

This is a very broad topic, but you can interpret it in whatever way you want. Maybe it is what you dream about at night, day-dreams, goals you want to achieve, life goals, or things you would love to learn. You could also leave a few pages for a bucket list to make them an actual goal to achieve.

Thoughts

You can update your journal with what has happened lately; this may include events you attended, what made you mad, what made your heart soar. It could be anything you want to talk about. Journals are a great way to rant or talk about your feelings without anyone judging you.

Lists

You know how you always see trailers for movies or read book descriptions but never remember them? Creating lists for the movies or shows you want to see, books you want to read, new foods you want to try, things to get done for the day, and ideas for blogs posts are perfect ways to update your journal and remember the things you want to do.

Stories

If you love to create stories and enjoy creative writing, this is a perfect place to make your content come to life!

Things You Have Learned

Through life you learn many things, from relationships to friendships, to life lessons and how to do things. You can jot down anything you have learned and look back to keep them in mind or in the back of your head.

Quotes and Pictures

I have so many favorite quotes from books, songs, and important people to me that I love having a special place to put them. Journals are a perfect place to put them and have a beautiful reminder by decorating the page and quote how you want to. Pictures are also an awesome thing to put in your journal. It could be magazine clippings, pictures of your best pals or family members, pets, or anything you snap a picture of.

Reasons to Get Out of Bed

Journals are such a good outlet to anything. Whether you suffer from depression or anxiety or anything else, they can be a way to help you understand your feelings. Sometimes it’s hard to be yourself and get out of bed. Creating a list of reasons and your favorite things to do is a good way to start.

Positive Vibes

Including some happy thoughts and positive vibes in your journal can help you look and see that there is hope for things you are going through. It can keep you in a happy mood or give you some hope.

Art

Creating things that are meaningful to you is important. If you enjoy drawing, sketch, paint, or any other form of art, this is the perfect place to put it.

Journals don’t have to be the typical update of your life everyday unless that is how you want it to be. There are so many different things you can put in your journal. The possibilities are endless so go out a make that journal unique to you and your likings!
