Lessons from The Bucket List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

The movie “The Bucket List” is one of my favorites. It’ll make you laugh. It’ll make you cry. It’ll make you want to see the world. It’ll even make you want to make your own list. This movie is so heart warming and heart breaking at the same time. If you have not seen it, I recommend wine, ice cream, and plenty of tissues. Watch it alone or with someone you’re comfortable ugly crying with because trust me you will be crying uncontrollably.

The plot of this movie begins with two men living very different lives. Jack Nicholson is a rich white man who alienated himself from everyone and chose to live a lonely and bitter life. Morgan Freeman played an African American family man with a loving wife, three children, and grandchildren. Both men found out they only had 6-12 months left to live, due to various types of cancers. They then commenced on a journey of completing adventures on a bucket list before they “kicked the bucket.” Both men learned valuable and life changing lessons about what is really important in life.

While watching the challenges and adventures these men went through, I learned a lot as well. It made me think about my life and the people I have lost. It made me want to write my own bucket list. Here is a list of a few life lessons I took away from this movie

  1. Never take things for granted
  2. Nothing is impossible
  3. Don’t let fear keep you from achieving your goals
  4. No regrets
  5. Live life to the fullest
  6. Be with the people you love
  7. Make the best out of times with the people you care about
  8. Don’t dwell on the past
  9. Be happy and grateful for what you have
  10. Love deeply and openly
