When you and your roommate become really close, you become best friends or even like sisters if you’re lucky. College gives everyone the opportunity to find people that they truly click with. We all have those friends who have a roommate who they despise, as well as the friends who are roommates with their childhood best friend and are absolutely inseparable. However, if you’re anything like me, you don’t know a single person at the university and move in day was “shell shock” to say the least. Throughout my freshman year, these are just a few experiences I had with a roommate after growing so close.
1. “Stand outside the shower so we can finish our conversation.”
Let’s admit it, we have all been there. Sometimes there is just too much to say in a day and too little time to say it. If one of you has to grab a quick shower but there is a big test that you need insight on or the latest news to celebrate, then it might just get discussed between the shower curtain. If one of you is just needing to rant about a class, or if you got accepted to a program and the time to share the news just cannot wait, the information needs to be shared ASAP. You will find yourself yelling over the drone of the shower to have a conversation quite often
2. “No, wait 5 minutes to text him back/answer his Snapchat.”
When you become close with your roommate, you will have a best friend to go to for all your relationship advice. She will be there to help with a text back or to give an opinion on how to interpret the previous response. Sometimes, even when you don’t want to hear it, she will be there to tell you that he is not worth it anymore. She will be there for the times when you are waiting for a text back or when you get your heart broken and need an emergency ice cream run.
3. “Quit turning off the heat!”
Just like any sibling fight, this one is bound to happen as well. The thermostat is always being adjusted and a compromise is hard to establish if you have a drafty dorm room. Sleeping with a fan on should be an option on the housing application, as well. This is ongoing, and you both might as well just get used to it. If you are fortunate enough to be cold natured or hot natured like your roommate, then consider yourselves lucky.
4. “Can I have a makeup wipe? I just ran out.”
This goes for more than makeup wipes, including shampoo, laundry detergent, water bottles, etc.; if you name it, it will eventually get shared. After a long day, nothing is worse than running out of something unexpectedly that you need. The moments when your roommate is there to save the day are a saving grace and remind you to be especially thankful for your roommate.
Having a roommate who is more like a sister is a blessing in disguise. They are there to help in any way you need. Just like a sibling, there may be arguments, but over the course of a semester or two, you will become so close that it feels like you are family. Through the good, the bad and the ugly, they are there for you. You will always have a listening ear whether or not it is for a paper or text response. You will always seek comfort and refuge in each other. Your college roommate just might turn into your lifelong friend before you know it.
