A Treasure Hunt for Happiness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Jefferson chapter.

I couldn’t find it in my new pair of shoes I struggled to walk in all night

Or the uncomfortable dress that made me feel like a stranger in my own body

I couldn’t find it in my red lipstick colored smile

I couldn’t find it on the fastest rollercoasters

Filled with screams and laughter, yet I had no smile

Am I missing something?

I couldn’t find it in my friends

The genuine smiles they seemed to share

I feel stuck to the wall like glue, unable to move and share their moments

I couldn’t find it in the weather

Even the sun seemed to shine on everyone but me

I couldn’t find it on TV

Showing lives of others’ I thought I needed to replicate

Instead I found it at the beach

In the seashells I collected and the smell of salt in the air

I found it in the mountains

Where the air is most clear and I feel one with the earth

I found it in my books

Where the words of those who have touched many lives inspired me to be better

Happiness is not supposed to be a constant state of being

Sometimes it is too difficult to choose to be happy, when the world is at its worst

But one thing I have learned is that the journey to be happy was the best choice I’ve ever made
