For the longest time, I struggled with my hair. It was a combination of loose curls and frizzy waves. Brushing it only made it look worse and straightening it was a hassle. It wasn’t until college that I embraced my natural curls and really started learning how to take care of my hair.

Step One: Find the right product

There are so many types of products to help you control frizz and maintain your curl pattern. There are different gels, mousses, and creams, and it’s impossible to try them all. I started with a mousse, but it left my hair feeling crunchy. Usually mousse is light and won’t weigh down your hair, however, the hold won’t last as long. After I switched to a gel with a strong hold, my curls became softer, less frizzy, and more defined. Creams are usually the heaviest type of product and work better with kinky, thick curls.

Step Two: Cut out sulfates and silicones from your hair products

These two ingredients are very harsh for your hair. Using sulfate and silicone free shampoo and conditioner has made my hair softer and made my curls more defined.

Step Three: Shampoo once or twice a week

Curly hair usually does better with natural oils. Plus, it is unnecessary and can be damaging to wash your hair every day.

Step Four: Combine a small amount of conditioner and some water into a spray bottle for days between washing.

This combination will help rejuvenate and reactivate your curls. It also helps combat frizz. I use it often. The only drawback is making sure that you use a product or a clarifying shampoo to prevent build up.

Step Five: Use a satin pillowcase

To protect your curls while you sleep, it’s best to put your hair up on your head into a messy, high bun and use a satin pillowcase. The satin really helps minimize frizz. When you wake up in the morning, you will only have to fix a few rebellious curls rather than most of your hair.

Curly hair can be a major hassle. It does whatever it wants, and changes every day. Hopefully these tips can help you tame your curls.
