A Letter to My Best Friend at a Different School

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Dear Best Friend,

I remember the first day of our freshman year of high school like it was yesterday. Never did I think that going to different schools would be so difficult. As our days began to dwindle down to hours, I knew this was going to be one of the hardest things we have ever done. We wouldn’t be able to see each other for months, which is crazy because we used to go barely 24 hours without seeing each other. I remember hugging you goodbye and saying, “I’m not sure when I’ll get to see you next” and at that exact moment, I broke down. Adjusting here has been pretty rough without you by my side, but I know this will only make our friendship stronger.

I miss seeing you all the time, and I especially miss our daily FaceTime calls. It seems now that because we are thousands of miles apart, our calls are becoming more sparse. We either have to avoid roomies eavesdropping on our conversations or have to run to class before someone is late. It’s just so much more difficult trying to keep you updated on my life. There are all new people here, so explaining stories takes twice as long because you don’t know anybody. However, it’s better you don’t know anybody because that means you will automatically take my side. It’s also not as interesting because I have absolutely no idea who your new friends are; I just hope they aren’t replacing me.

There have been times when I just wanted to pack up my room and transfer to your school. A part of me wonders what would have happened if I actually decided to do that. In the end, I’m glad we’ve gone to different schools. We have both grown so much in our friendship and as individuals. Whenever you need a reminder, just remember that I am so proud of you. You’re going to be so successful and will accomplish everything that you want and more. Even though we aren’t together right now, I have no doubt that we will be best friends for the rest of our lives.

Love you most,

Your Best Friend
