I’m going to be frank – your mom carried you for 9 months, birthed you and has been putting up with you ever since. Moms are freaking amazing. They are like superheroes with their sixth sense to help whenever something bad happens. She is there for you through thick and thin. Kind of like a best friend. No, exactly like a best friend. Here are 6 reasons why you should take advantage of making your mom your BFF.

1. She STAYS hyping you up

You could have gotten the absolute worst haircut and she will still tell you that you look beautiful. Obviously, your mom is proud of who you are, so you should be too. She is always there to remind you how wonderful you are. It could be the worst day of your life & somehow, she’ll know exactly what to say. You could be feeling a little fluffy in your favorite sweater & she will tell you it looks like you lost five pounds. While others tear you down, your mom is only there to build you up!

2. She is the paparazzi

You’re enjoying a cup of coffee at your favorite, aesthetically pleasing cafe with your mother. The perfect Instagram opportunity to rack in the likes. Your mom’s willing to stay there and take bomb ass pictures of you until you are satisfied with the way that one piece of hair lays.

No matter how many times I ask my mom to take a picture of me she has never declined. It’s like Lady Gaga and the paparazzi. She is my BIGGEST fan. OK, her editing skills may be lacking but she is doing her best to get all the best angles. She is happy to see you looking all cute’n’happy in your scarf with your PSL.

3. The voice of reason mixed with cuddling mixed with gossip

So, combining these three creates the ultimate bonding session. First, she will tell you exactly what you need to hear. No sugar coating. No light-hearted advice. Our mothers’ opinion should be very valuable to us. If she is giving you her honest, harsh opinion, accept it. She would never steer you wrong because she wants what’s best for you. Even if it pains you to hear her tell you that your one friend is a bum, listen to her. Moms have a twisted way of always being right.

And while she’s spitting her wisdom to you, you both can be cuddled up watching How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days together. Boyfriends are nice to cuddle with, but nothing will replace a mother’s hug.

This also creates the perfect gossip session. She’ll listen to you complain about a classmate you can’t stand. In return, she’ll sit there and talk to you in disbelief about what Lisa did at the PTO meeting Thursday night. You could gossip to your friends, your boyfriend or your sisters. When it comes to gossiping with your mom, that gossip is sacred. It’s the best gossip session ever.

4. It’s 2 AM and she’ll still answer

Ladies FORGET texting that boy at 2 AM with a “wyd” message. You do NOT need that in your life. If you’re sad and lonely call your mom. If you’re in trouble, call your mom. If you cannot stop crying, call your mom! Just hearing her voice is enough to calm you down. She will never get angry for a late-night call if you are struggling with something. Listen, your mom will always be there for you. No matter how sticky the situation is. If you call her in the middle of the night, it is almost a guaranteed answer. Believe me on this one.

5. She’ll buy you Starbucks… then drink the entire cup

I had to include this one because it makes me laugh. So many times, I am in the car with my mom running errands and we’ll make a coffee run. My mom always says I can get whatever I want but she’s not getting anything. The next thing I know, she’s asking to “try just one sip” and then the whole drink is gone! (She’s done this with my Chik-fil-a fries, too.)

6. She gets it. She gets you. Crazy, wild, beautiful you.

Some days, it feels like no one understands you. Except your mom. She will listen until she gets it right. She will accept you for who you are. She will support you with whatever you do. Whoever you want to be that day. She is looking out for your best interest. Your mom’s goal is to make sure you are happy with who you are. Embrace all your weird quirks because your mom already has. Be proud of who she has shaped you into.

Call your mom. Wish her well. Thank her for all that she’s done. Hug her the next time you see her. And remind her that you love her.

HCXO,

Alyssa
