Make These Easy DIY Beauty Recipes With Ingredients You Can Find In Your Kitchen

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rutgers chapter.

Alright ladies, let’s be real. In a world filled with hundreds of thousands of beauty products made from chemicals that are impossible to pronounce, it can be quite daunting trying to pick out facials and masks that are not only good for the skin but affordable as well. (We’re all broke college kids amirite?)

Growing up, one of my favorite activities during sleepovers with my friends was concocting our own DIY face and hair masks. Even though those days are long gone, I still love incorporating these beauty recipes into my skincare routine today. Here are some of my favorite DIY beauty recipes that can be made from ingredients straight from your kitchen, bringing the luxury of the spa to you at home. #treatyoself

Sugar and Honey Exfoliant

Source

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons of sugar

1 teaspoon of honey

1 teaspoon of olive oil

Directions:

First, add 4 tablespoons of granulated sugar into a bowl. Next, add 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Lastly, add 1 teaspoon of honey and mix well. Scrub into the skin for five minutes and wash with cleanser and oil.

This exfoliant is my personal favorite and always leaves my skin feeling soft and glowy. I like to use it about once or twice a week as needed. The sugar works as an exfoliant for your skin buffing away the dead skin cells while the honey soothes your skin. Olive oil is great for moisturizing dry skin.

TIP: if you have sensitive and irritable skin, I recommend swapping the sugar with raw oats because they are a more gentle exfoliant option and can help soothe redness.

Moisturizing Egg Hair Mask

Source

Ingredients:

1 egg

1 tablespoon of coconut oil or olive oil

Directions:

First, crack the egg into a bowl and mix. Then, add 1 tablespoon of either coconut oil or olive oil. Apply to hair for at least 30 minutes and shampoo afterward.

This beauty recipe is actually passed down to me from my mom. Ever since I was a little girl, she used to love putting eggs in my hair once a week. Although I always found the ritual a little weird and kinda gross, I later discovered how amazing eggs are for the hair. Raw eggs can help revive damaged hair by strengthening and moisturizing it. Using this mask can help repair dry and brittle hair and leave it feeling soft and shiny.

TIP: I recommend taking your time to wash this mask out of your hair and to use a generous amount of shampoo afterward because it can leave your hair smelling like eggs (yikes!).

Honey & Lemon Yogurt Facial Mask

Source

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons of plain Greek yogurt

2 teaspoons of honey

1 teaspoon of diluted lemon juice

Directions:

First, combine all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Then apply to the face for ten-fifteen minutes and then wash off.

Plain Greek yogurt works wonders for the face because it is anti-aging and helps brighten your complexion. I got the idea to incorporate honey into this mask because my dermatologist once told me that honey is antibacterial and can help with acne prone skin. Likewise, a little bit of lemon juice can help fade away scarring and dark spots.

TIP: Try to dilute the lemon juice by incorporating water. Sometimes lemon can be harsh on sensitive skin so diluting it will help you reap the benefits of the juice while still being gentle on the face.

And that’s it! I hope you guys try these amazing recipes at home. Remember to treat yourself to an at-home spa day once in a while because you definitely deserve it.

Until next time,
