We all have this idea in our mind of being well-dressed, successful professionals, but let’s face it – professional clothing is EXPENSIVE! Don’t fret, though, because by investing (and by investing, I mean like $35) in a few staple pieces, you can class up your wardrobe for all of those presentations, interviews and networking events that are taking over your life.

1. A black blazer

Nothing classes up an outfit quite like a blazer. By investing in one nice black blazer (Old Navy and Target are your best friends), you can create tons of stylish looks. You can wear the same blazer two or three times in one week, and no one will notice because you can change it up with various pants, skirts and different colored blouses. If you can swing it, try grabbing blazers in colors like navy and gray, too! Any neutral color can be paired with anything and is a definite staple for your wardrobe. Plus, depending on the dress code of your workplace, blazers look great with anything from skinny jeans and dresses to professional slacks.

2. Shoes

There’s nothing worse than going to finish off a nice-looking outfit only to realize your shoe options are sneakers or those crusty ballet flats from high school that make your heels bleed. One or two pairs of nice, comfortable professional shoes is an absolute must – black flats, short heels or chunky-heeled booties are great options that will be cute and still comfortable enough to survive a whole day in.

3. Jewelry

A few strategic accessories can take an outfit from “eh” to “wow” in just a few seconds. A statement necklace with a solid colored top or a classy, beautiful pair of rose-gold stud earrings can make people look at you and say, “Wow, she really put some effort into that outfit!” Charming Charlie’s, Icing and Amazon are all great places to find cute jewelry for under $10.

4. Statement Lipstick

Even if you don’t typically wear a lot of makeup, a bold lip can do wonders for confidence levels. A bold red, a matte neutral, or even a subtle sparkle (depending on the professional environment) will make you shine like the star you are. High-end brands are great, but (shh don’t tell) a $4 tube from Walgreens works just as well.

5. A smile

Yes, I know this is cheesy, don’t @ me. BUT, it’s totally true – if you feel professional and you rock an expression that reflects that (RBF works too, if you’re going for more of a power aura), other people will see you as professional.

The point is, you don’t have to break the bank to have a cohesive and professional style. Try these wallet-saving tips and become your best professional self!
