Angie Thomas’s terrific novel, The Hate U Give, became a bestseller when it debuted in February 2017. Shortly after its debut, the novel made it to the New York Times’ YA bestseller’s list and stayed there for 50 weeks. The novel tells the story of a high-school student named Starr Carter who witnessed her best friend shot by a policeman. After the shooting, Star struggles to find the power in her voice to give her account of the shooting.
While filming about this important subject matter, the actors and the director really wanted stay authentic to the characters in the novel and do justice in telling a story that is a reoccurring issue in today’s society. Actor, Algee Smith accounted about how difficult it was to film is a death scene. In an interview at Morehouse College on October 4th, Smith stated that filming the scene was very meticulous and one of the most laborious act of his career. With playing a character whose story is familiar to many people, he wanted to give the role his all and authentically portray the reality that many young black men face.
Directed by George Tillman, The Hate U Give captures the attention of the audience by concentrating on a variety of concerning subject matters. Along with an outstanding cast, and a motivational soundtrack the film definitely exceeds expectations.
