4 Things You Probably Took For Granted Before College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at LMU chapter.

Saying college is an “adjustment” is a huge understatement. Here are 4 common things I definitely took for granted before college and you probably did too.

1. Having Home-Cooked Meals

Before college, I loved having my mom’s jollof rice with stew, meat, and plantains. In college, you have to take extra steps to eat the foods you love having back at home.

Here are couple of ways:

A. You either have to walk all the way to the dining hall and hope they have what you are craving. Sometimes, there is even only one place open in the dining hall.

B. Get a toaster or microwave to heat up what you want. The problem is you don’t want your dorm smelling like food.

C. You could use the microwave in the lounge, but walking back and forth to warm up some noodles is not fun.

D. Go to restaurant and they’ll try to recreate your favorite home-cooked meal. But, that costs extra money. Plus, not everyone has a car or wants to use that money on uber.

2. No Shower Shoes or Lugging That Shower Caddy

It’s kinda weird but I miss having my bare feet feel the ground in the shower. In college, you have to make sure you wear your shower shoes because who knows what’s on that bathroom floor. It takes skill to balance on your flip flops while washing your legs and feet. Also, I miss having all my shower essentials already in the shower. Every time you have to make sure you remember all your shower needs and then try not to get locked out of your room. It hasn’t happened to me yet, thank God!

3. Being Able to Hug Your Family Back Home

As an out-of-state student, I can definitely say this one hits right at home. See what I did there? At home, I could hug my parents and sister whenever I wanted to and didn’t think twice about it. Plus, I was always surrounded by them. Now, I can only call or facetime. It’s great that we have different forms of communication, but it’s just not the same.

4.  Your Bed And Room

No amount of memory foam or extra padding can replace your bed back at home! My college dorm is nice and comfy. But, it doesn’t compare to my own room. I definitely miss my little sanctuary. Cherish those days back at home during breaks and long weekends!
