The biggest heartbreak is not necessarily in the romantic relationships you lose. Based on my experiences thus far, I think the worst form of heartbreak is the loss of close friendships.

It happens to everyone. The late nights complaining about the next Bio test or History paper, and cracking jokes in the dining hall are long gone. You pass each other in the hallways or the quad with your heads down. You look at your phone, your shoes, or anything else but them, never making eye contact, or acknowledging their presence. You become strangers, and you’re left with a feeling of emptiness and estrangement.

These things don’t occur randomly. People don’t just coincidentally leave your life; losing a friend is a culmination of several factors. It may be your differing personalities or beliefs. No matter what it is, it is never a single person’s fault. Both sides are to blame, and I think many people miss that point.

As I look at the pictures on my wall, I think about the fun times I’ve shared with familiar faces smiling down at me. Although it hurts to let go, the future always holds something brighter for everyone. Friendships are delicate, precious pieces of your life that may fade in time, but the memories will always be there to comfort you.
