Here Is To Surviving My First Semester of College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNH chapter.

It seems like just yesterday I was making sure I had everything all packed up into my mom and dad’s car with the whole thought of “Oh my god I am going to college. This is it, I am growing up” playing over and over in my head. It is really humorous honestly. I mean, you watch those movies where the kids grow up throughout the whole thing and at the end they go to college, and everything will be different. You just don’t expect it to happen to you so soon.

As I sit here with two weeks left in the semester, looking back on everything, I would have never thought I would have learned as much as I have, done so many cool,  different things, and not to mention the friendships I have made that I know will last a lifetime. All of this done within the matter of a couple months.

But I am not going to lie to y’all and say it was all happy smiles, good times and great grades. It was nerve racking, hard, stressful, crazy, complicated, all around mind-boggling, and not to mention a few 70’s on those psych quizzes…(don’t worry mom, C’s get degree, am I right??).

The beginning of the semester seemed to be a time for me to continue to find who I truly am. I branched out, met new people, took different classes, overcame some hard times, and grew as a person. It made me forget everything and allowed me to live in the moment. The nights we would all get back from being out, and just sitting and talking in the halls until 3 in the morning, just expressing and sharing who we are: it was amazing

.

By mid-semester, I missed my dog, my home, and of course my family. But then again that’s another great thing about college. It allows you to slip away from home and yet make it so you appreciate it even more when you come home. (And yes, I did cry when I saw my pretty mountains again).

The last couple of weeks have been filled with happiness and an absurd amount of stress. I have never cried, yet laughed more in my life within a short amount of time, and I know it goes the same for everyone on campus. If I were to give a piece of advice to anyone, whether it be their first semester, second, or even their last, I would have to say, just live, laugh, and love. But of course stay focused, organized…and do not forget to have fun. It the only thing that will get you through it. Through college, and maybe even life.

Xox,

Allie
