Why You Need a Bonsai Plant in Your On Campus Dorm

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rollins chapter.

One way to forge energyy unto your presence and wake up surrounded by nature is to start growing and caring for your own bonsai plant. These trees were originally an ancient Chinese tradition and have also been used by Japanese Zen Buddhists for thousands of years as a symbol of good energy and growth. These miniature trees exert a message of careful attention and serenity and promote natural beauty with little help from humans.

The balance and peace that is represented through the care and nurturing of a plant is the heart of a Bonsai plant’s deeper meaning. The original growers of these charming, two to four feet tall trees, placed a heavy amount of value on the symbolism behind these plants. The most interesting part about starting your own bonsai or family of bonsais is that there are dozens of varieties to choose from online and in garden stores that each represent something different. Similar to essential oils, each different tree has a different benefit they will bring into your college home environment.

It’s pricier to go out and get a store-bought bonsai and more fun to set your own up and watch it grow from raw material, which is called a “pre-bonsai”. For that reason, make sure you look into getting the right type of bonsai for you, whether it be an indoor or outdoor breed. Watching a tree grow fully will take four years so check out buying a starter kit, which will give you all the wire and other supplies you’ll need to cultivate the perfect dorm tree!
