It was announced February 19th by Chanel that fashion legend and industry icon Karl Lagerfeld has died in Paris at 85 years old. Known for his tremendous design skills, unique look and creative innovation, the German genius leaves behind a larger-than-life legacy that will live on in the fashion world forever.

Best known as the creative director for Chanel, Lagerfeld took over the brand in 1983 and revamped it to be the respected powerhouse it is today. He is responsible for that infamous interlinked “CC” and strings of pearls that so many associate with Chanel. His ideas made for classy looks in high fashion that, no matter what the trend, will always be classic.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Lagerfeld left home in his mid-teenage years and went on to compete in design competitions and complete his education in other parts of Europe such as Paris. He went on to work in brilliant and distinguished fashion houses such as Balmain, Jean Patou, Chloe and Fendi. He designed anything from costumes to runway pieces as well as accessories. Lagerfeld also worked as a photographer for editorial and for his own fashion campaigns for his brand, which sells clothing, accessories and shoes for women, men and children.

Lagerfeld, like many great legacies, leaves behind some controversy, such as his tendency to not hold his tongue when it comes to commenting on the appearance of public figures like Adele and Pippa Middleton.

He will be remembered with the exclusive image of a powdered white ponytail and dark sunglasses. The love and respect those in the fashion world had for him can be seen through their social media tributes, such as Karlie Kloss’ Instagram post and Vogue’s tribute article.

Even though the fashion industry is a bustling, crazy, ever-changing world of different trends and unique style, his legacy will forever be this: a quintessential individual whose flair and capabilities have helped shape fashion to be chic, classic, and beautiful.
