Why Frequent Calls Home are Important

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at GCU chapter.

In college or just in life in general, it is very easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle that life hands us. Whether it may be working two jobs along with going to school full time or having other commitments, it can easily get in the way of making a short amount of time set aside to call your loved ones at home. It does not have to be an hour long Facetime or a 30 minute phone call, but just setting aside at least 5 to 10 minutes just to see how your parents or your favorite sibling are doing, can most definitely go a long way.

After spending at least 18 years of your life living with whoever is in your family, it is important to understand that they are the ones who knew you from the start. They were there to witness so many different phases of your life such as going through a breakup with your high school boyfriend, falling off your bike and scraping your knee, or losing your first tooth; your family was there for all those memorable moments. Why stop letting them in on your life even when you are living on your own in a different state? They want to be as involved as they could possibly be, even though you are not constantly being in their presence as you were when you were growing up.

However, it is most important to understand that in whatever path you are choosing to go down in your life, there is always that one significant person or multiple people, who has been able to be a positive and motivating factor in your life. For many of you, it could be your parents, your siblings, your grandparents, or whoever was in your life while you had been growing up in your childhood. Whether you are in school to be a teacher, an engineer, or you had just gotten accepted into your school’s nursing program, there is a specific reason as to why you are in the position you are currently in. It is very easy to become so indulged in your current life that you may sometimes forget to reach out to the ones who have been there from the start. Staying in touch with your loved ones can be such a heart-warming moment to know that they still very much care about you even in the business of your life that you could be experiencing.

Even though it is important to keep your family in the loop of your life, it is also important to know how much they have given you in terms of knowing what to do when it comes to certain things in life. Such as your dad teaching you how to change a tire or your mom teaching you how to cook, you started off somewhere. It is significant to keep in mind that the things you do, the way you act, and the way you treat others, are all because of the loved ones who you spent your childhood with. So set aside some time for the ones who gave you so much to live for. They will greatly appreciate it.
