In the age of Netflix, Hulu, HBO and more, one of the best forms of entertainment is slowly getting kicked to the curb. Reading a book is one of my most favorite activities and so, I encourage you all to pick up a novel this spring! Here is a list of great books to add to your list so that you can get back onto the reading train and learn to enjoy this great pastime!
For a Classic Read:
If you are interested in catching up on all of those books you SparkNoted in high school or if you want to make sure you are up to date on common literary references check out this “100 Books to Read Before You Die” list here. Some great titles include Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.
For a Laugh-Out-Loud Novel:
Are you looking for a book that will tickle your funny bone? Check out Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman for a story about a quirky young woman living in Scotland, who struggles with social skills and keeping her thoughts to herself. If this doesn’t do it for you, check out Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple and read all about the meltdown and disappearance of Bernadette Fox.
For a Light-Hearted Beach Read:
The Boston Girl, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and One Day in December are just three of the many great books you can pick up for a day on the beach. Sometimes a sweet and soothing story is all you need to jump start your reading habit, so be sure to check out these titles and the many more here!
For a Page Turning Thriller:
If you want the kind of book that you just simply cannot put down, then head to the bookstore for these two novels. Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty and The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins will leave you guessing at every page. You will certainly be hooked as soon as you open up these novels stay up nights reading just to figure out the ending.
For a Heartwarming Tale of Love:
Rules of Civility, Me Before You, and The Light Between Oceans are a few great choices if you are looking for a story with a complicated, yet inspiring love story. With complex characters and intricate plots, these are not your average love stories. Trade in that hundredth viewing of The Notebook and try out one of these novels!
For an educational story:
Historical fiction is one of the greatest genres out there as it tells an exciting story while educating you on some of the history of the setting. The Book Thief, Trinity, Where the Crawdads Sing, The Nightingale, The Help, and Water for Elephants are just a handful of the many great historical fiction titles. These stories take place in settings ranging from Nazi Germany to small-town North Carolina in the 1960s.
