This time I’m not talking about layering clothes but layering skin products. As the summer months roll around there are a few crucial rules to take note of. The order in which you apply products to your clean face is essential. It doesn’t matter how much water you drink or how healthy your diet is if you don’t know the order to apply your products. Products can react differently with each other and your skin. This has the potential to cause your skin to become dehydrated or inflamed.

Besides the layering, it is important to remember to keep your routine consistent but also practice intuitive self-care. If your skin is feeling really tight or dull, it’s okay to adjust your routine to adapt to whatever makes it feel healthier.

Cleanser

Whether you choose a water-based or cream-based cleanser, it will get rid of any dirt or germs from the night before.

Exfoliator

Be careful not to overdo it though and choose gentle scrubs. Harsh scrubs may make you feel like you’re scrubbing away all your problems, but instead it can do more harm than good by damaging the top coat of your skin.

 Toner

No matter how much you want to avoid it, toner is necessary for dewy skin. Cleansing the skin will either spike or deplete the skin of its natural pH levels, which can be neutralized with an alcohol-free toner.

Facial mist / serum

Facial mist is very similar to a toner in terms of purpose and functionality, but it also is just a refreshing start to your morning. My personal favorites are the Mario Badescu Rose Water Facial Mist or the Mario Badescu Cucumber and Aloe Facial Mist.

Moisturizer / Eye cream

You can never forget about moisturizer or eye cream. Even in the summer when you may be concerned about it sweating it off, I promise you, you don’t want to miss this step. Skin needs to maintain a balanced composure or else it will try to make up for the lack of moisture and produce its own oils. This will more than likely will result in acne. Eye cream is also imperative to get rid of any evidence of how few hours of sleep you got the night before. My favorite is the Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with avocado.

Sunscreen

A lot of moisturizers have sunscreen in them, in which case you can bypass the sunscreen as long as you make sure to get some SPF into your routine.

Face oil

Face oil works as the perfect primer for a dewy look, but even if you opt out of makeup that day, facial oil has many benefits. Oils can shrink large pores and calm any irritation or redness.

After what seems like a million products, it’s time to move on to whatever makeup you choose, if any! If you take a little extra time in the morning, your skin will be glowy and hydrated all day long.
