The ~iconic~ musical, West Side Story, is getting a remake! Spielberg is directing the film and we could not be more excited! The original film that was based off of the Broadway show which came out in 1961, and included the legendary Rita Moreno in the cast. Those who don’t know, this musical is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet with two people from rival gangs fall in love in New York City. Here’s what we know so far:
Ansel Elgort is Tony and Newcomer, Rachel Zegler is Maria
You probably fell in love with Ansel during The Fault in Our Stars or maybe you remember him from Divergent. Either way, we’re sure that he will make us all swoon once again. Rachel is new to the scene, but she landed this major role out of 30,000 people! We are sure that she will do great!
Maddie Ziegler is in the Cast
Remember when we would all tune into Dance Moms each week to see what was going on with the Elite Team at Abby Lee’s Dance Company? Now, Maddie is all grown up and is a member of the Jets, one of the gangs in the show. We are very interested to see how Maddie tackles this role.
Rita Moreno is Coming Back
She might not be Anita this time around, but Rita Moreno will be heading back to the world of West Side Story. On Live! With Kelly and Ryan, Rita told viewers that she would be playing Valentina, the lady who owns the candy store. In the original adaptation, it was a man named Doc that owned the candy store.
The only #deets that we do know so far is filming starts this summer and it comes out in 2020. Until then, we’ll just have to watch or rewatch the original.
