Many know Kylie Jenner as one of the youngest “self-made” billionaires selling truckloads of cosmetics that continue to break the internet and sell out within minutes. Well, she is continuing to expand her name in the beauty and cosmetic industry with the launch of her new skincare line, Kylie Skin. Like many successful businesses these days, running an effective advertising campaign depends on how many social media followers you have. In this case, Kylie Skincare has millions and launched the cosmetic line across Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter on May 10. Kylie Skin debuted six products consisting of Foaming Face Wash, Walnut Face Scrub, Vanilla Milk Toner, Face Moisturizer, Eye Cream, and Vitamin C Serum. The teaser is just that as the six products will not be available for purchase until May 22. But wait, the products aren’t even out yet and there is already controversy surrounding the ingredients.

The main issue people are currently focusing on is within the Walnut Face Scrub. People are rallying around a lawsuit in 2016, when the company Unilever was sued for five million dollars because of the St. Ives Apricot Face Scrub which was formulated with walnut shells which caused harm to users skin. When walnut shells are used in beauty products and not properly pulverized for cosmetic use, you become susceptible to microscopic tears all over your skin which can lead to bacteria getting into the skin causing infections.

 

Personally, I think that people’s negative reactions to her products are a little premature due to the fact that her line has yet to come out. Because the said product is not available to the public yet the masses have not yet seen the ingredients list. That being said, it is unknown if Kylie Skin is using walnut shell elements (which is usually in powder form) or the walnut itself (also in powder form). Because of this uncertainty, we cannot conclude any information about the exfoliant and the effect it will have on a person’s skin.

 

But the good news is, is that Jenner’s exfoliant is a physical exfoliant, which means the users have the ability to control how hard they exfoliate their skin. Dr. Zeichner, a New York-based dermatologist shared that a negative reaction to a physical exfoliant is typically caused by the way people are exfoliating over what they are exfoliating with.

 

Overall, Jenner’s skin care line is off to a great start with her branding being simple, beautiful, and classy. In addition to that, her prices are surprisingly low compared to some of the products within her Kylie Cosmetic line. While sharing her products with the media, Jenner mentioned that each product is priced below $30 while the entire bundle will run you $125. I’m not a math major but, it certainly pays to buy the bundle!  I am looking forward to the launch of the new Kylie Skin line and expect it to sell out just as Kylie Cosmetics did when she first launched her Lip Kits.
