10 Clothing Essentials for a College Student’s Wardrobe

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Howard chapter.

As a first-year college student, you may have difficulties figuring out what to keep in your closet and what to throw out. Fortunately enough, it’s never too late to add the proper clothing essentials you need to be prepared for any weather, event, or day. Here are 10 MUST haves in your closet:

  1.  Formal outfit

You may get caught up in the fun of college: meeting new people, going to parties, and just hanging out on campus. All of that is great but having a formal professional outfit is VERY essential, especially when career-fair season and business meetings start to commence.

  1.  Versatile going out bag

A versatile bag has become a necessity to me and a lot of people I know. It goes with the majority of your outfits, it holds your keys, wallet, id, lip gloss, etc. A preferred type of bag for me is a cross-body bag, that way I don’t have to worry as much about misplacing or losing it.

  1.  LOTS of underwear

As a girl, a human even, you can never go wrong with too many underwears. Over the summer, I throw out old underwear and stack up on fresh new underwear. Having different types of underwear helps with a lot of my outfits. A thong, boy shorts, and different kinds of sports bras are all types of underwear one should have in their wardrobe.

  1.  BASICS

When I say basics I actually mean basics. Leggings, crop tops, T-shirts, simple jeans, anything that you can throw on when you want to be comfortable yet stylish. Having basic neutral colors helps a lot when trying to put outfits together. Simplicity is very trendy.

  1.  Trendy Jeans

There are so many styles when it comes to jeans: bootcut, low-rise, skinny jeans, and jeans with holes in them. I think it’s essential to have trendy jeans in your wardrobe so your whole outfit can be complete whether it’s for a night out with your friends, or for everyday wear to class.

  1.  Sweatshirts

A sweatshirt is the ultimate must-have as a college student. If you don’t have a sweatshirt with your college on it then you have NO school spirit. Sweatshirts can be a quick comfortable going to class outfit or even something you wear to lounge around in your dorm or late night adventures.

  1.  Day-to-Night Items

It’s a good idea to have day-to-night items in your closet. Your schedule can consist of classes from 10 am to 3 pm and then you might have a meeting or two and then get invited to grab something to eat later in the day. You may not have time to go back to your dorm and change. Day-to-Night items are great for these situations.

  1.  Shoes (Sneakers, Heels, Boots)

Every college student needs at least 2 pairs of shoes in each style. Sneakers are essential for everyday looks, heels are essentials for going out or business meetings, boots are essential for a fall look or for the rain and snow. It’s important to have shoes for all types of weather.

  1.  A cute tote bag

Sometimes you may want to be on the go and don’t want to carry around a backpack all day. A cute tote that can hold all your necessities throughout the day is a great thing to have in your wardrobe.

  1. Outerwear

Most people don’t think they would need outerwear especially depending on the season, but trust when I say that outerwear is essential. There are nights/days where the weather isn’t what you expected and you’re going to need a leather jacket or a cardigan to stay warm or to simply complete your outfit.
