Five Adele Songs to Listen to in Times of Sadness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Kutztown chapter.

We all get in those moods where we just want to listen to sad songs and cry until we feel better. My favorite singer is Adele, and she just so happens to be an expert at writing heartbreaking songs. There’s a few specific ones I have to listen to when I need a song for my broken heart.

First Love (19)

In her first album, Adele writes about her breakup with her first love from her teenage years.

Forgive me, first love, but we’re through.

Someone Like You (21)

I feel like everyone knows this song. From her second album, one of her most famous songs to date, “Someone Like You,” tells the story of Adele’s past love moving on with another woman, even though she’s still in love with him. It makes me emotional to think about how she will still cry whenever she sings this song live.

Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.

Turning Tables (21)

I listened to this song from her second album about a hundred times over, and I’m still not over it. Adele writes about leaving a toxic relationship and the strength she gains with it, though it’s not an easy thing to do.

I braved a hundred storms to leave you.

All I Ask (25)

Adele beautifully sang this song at the 2016 Grammys after not being on the stage for a few years. Co-written with Bruno Mars, Adele sings about a breakup she knows is coming, but doesn’t want to happen, so she and her partner should enjoy the time they spend together while it’s still there.

I know there is no tomorrow.

Love in the Dark (25)

This is probably my favorite song from her “25” album, and it breaks my heart every time it plays. This Adele song—about, yes, another breakup—tells the story of Adele ready to leave her partner, though she knows he doesn’t want the same. It’s kind of like the other perspective from “All I Ask.”

I don’t want to carry on like everything is fine.

Music is incredible in that it tells stories we can relate to when we listen, and I think Adele really captures that ability in her songs. The lyrics and sound are truly magical, even if she’s bringing me to tears in the process. I can only hope her next album comes soon so we can share more of these experiences with her.
