I saw It: Chapter Two this past weekend, and it reminded me why I love watching horror films so much. The energy in the theater was electric. Horror fanatics gathered together, adrenaline pumping, as we awaited the chills from watching Pennywise the dancing clown on screen. The jumps, the screams and the laughs were all shared among the crowd. We’re able to experience the scares in unison, which is what makes the experience so much fun.
So with spooky season just around the corner, here are some of my favorite horror films that would be perfect to watch with your friends. So grab your BFFs, pop some popcorn, light your favorite fall candle and get ready to scream!
- Halloween (1978)

This nostalgic classic will always be at the top of my list. What was the start of thrasher films, is a perfect movie to laugh at, while still getting those scares in. Trust me, you’ll be checking the back of your car for the rest of your life, and never think of the song “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” the same. Watch closely to keep up with Michael Myers, and enjoy watching the scream queen herself, Jamie Lee Curtis, do what she does best.

Here’s Johnny! Can you tell I’m a Stephen King fan? Stanley Kubrick’s rendition of The Shining is nothing short of art, and sends shivers up my spine every single time. Not only is it visually stunning, but the performances by Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall make it that much more frightening.

Have those lambs stopped screaming, Clarice? This psychological thriller has an ominous tone that keeps you at the edge of your seat. Each shot is anxiety ridden, and director Jonathon Demme’s choice of having Clarice’s perspective (Jodie Foster), throughout the film makes the viewer feel as if they’re in danger with her. Anthony Hopkins portrayal of Hannibal Lecter adds to the fright, and you’ll be quoting him for months.

The 2017 version of It is one of the greatest horror films of all time; I mean it. Bill Skarsgard’s performance as Pennywise is one of the most frightening performances I’ve ever seen, and he makes it hard to remember that Pennywise is just a character and not waiting to get you afterwards. The jump-scares are certainly there, but each performance and perfectly chosen actor for each character is what makes this film work as well as it does.

Oh honey, grab onto your rosary you’re in for a good scare. Every single time I watch this movie I have nightmares for a week and I’ve probably seen it ten times. Yes, that’s a lot of nightmares! The fact that this is based on a true story is horrifying in itself, but the fear of the unknown and yes, demons, makes for this to be a terrifying watch.
