How To Fit In Without “Fitting In”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Hampton U chapter.

College can be a very confusing time in a student’s life. Figuring out who you are can be difficult among hundreds of other students with a variety of backgrounds, interests and ideas. There’s so many other types of people that it can be hard to find your place on this vast campus. Everyone is trying to find their group of people to take on this journey with, but not everyone will be the right fit for you. However, just because you are trying to gain friendships, doesn’t mean you have to lose yourself in the process.

First off, be yourself! This may sound cliche, but it works! I find that more people are open to starting friendships with someone who they feel is being their true self. Knowing yourself is another important factor. Confused of who you really are makes it easy for others to persuade, this could lead you to situations that you may not be comfortable with. College forces you to be comfortable with being alone. It’s okay if you don’t have a big group of friends, its okay to not want to go to every party. IT’S OKAY! Being true to yourself is key, so embrace it!

Doing things that make you happy can also guide you to where you belong on campus. Join a club, find a hobby and go to school events. College is a melting pot of organizations, clubs and resources that can apply to pretty much anyone. College is all about finding yourself so use your time here to do just that. If you don’t like one club, join another one until you find something that is just for you. There are no guidelines to how we live our lives so you have to be the one to make the best of it.

Fitting in can be stressful. New environments, new people and new standards, it can be a lot. I personally am a firm believer in a go with the flow, what is meant to be will be mentality. If you are being yourself and someone doesn’t like it, so be it. Your person or persons will come in due time. Remember, never settle for what you feel isn’t you, listen to your gut and always go with your heart.
