Why go to class when our future is UNCERTAIN?

This has been the question running through many of our minds as our climate deteriorates and our Earth sends out more warning signs of the fate we are to encounter if we tread this current path.

In recent years, awareness has blossomed into a full-fledged storm of children, teens, and adults fighting for climate change and environmental action.

Beginning September 20th, the global climate strikes began. This movement is picking up speed, going on until the 27th. These serve as a wake-up call for all people, specifically with younger generations taking charge. Students, NGOs, protesters, social movements and various organizations have come together and congregated for this week of rallying and advocating to happen.

Almost 160 countries are participating in this movement as it spreads like an awakening fire. People are appreciating and taking a stand to support young climate advocates and strikers, funding or organizing for their cause. A record-number of people have participated so far, making this movement the biggest ever.

Universities in particular are strong generators of this strike, with the priority being to leave class in support of the stoppage of fossil fuel usage and living a sustainable lifestyle. University of North Texas had its climate strike take place this past Friday, with student speakers, professors and their perfect posters, and hundreds of students gathered with resounding cries for change.

With the Student Government Association organizing the strike at the UNT Library Mall, their president spoke, along with city council members and sustainability representative. Some other thought-provoking insights were offered from passionate students, stirring up the crowd further.

In this day and age, our generation has been ridiculed, looked down on, and not expected much of. Despite being handed a broken Earth to begin with, we are inciting the most change and chaos to an inherently reckless and selfish society. Thundering voices, such as Greta Thunberg, have grown to inspire millions, like her latest speech addressing the failures of global leaders at the UN.

The Global Climate Strike is happening right NOW. What are you going to do about it?
