If you’re looking for a fun way to spend crisp fall afternoons with your pals, well stop looking, because with geocaching you’ll be going on super fun adventures and scavenger hunts!
The word comes from 1790s France in which the definition was “to store something temporarily in a hiding space”. You can use an app and your GPS to scout out caches, which are little boxes ideally with trinkets inside! The idea is to collect the trinkets that people have left behind and refill the box with something small that you bring along with you in your journey!
Geocaching is a great way to explore the natural areas around where you live while enjoying all of the elements of fall: cool weather, changing colors, and beautiful wildlife! I’ve never tried geocaching in an urban environment, but you can! Caches are hidden in all kinds of interesting places!
BONUS: Letterboxing is another really cool scavenger hunt-type activity. It is essentially the same as geocaching, but you search for paper booklets where people leave notes, their signatures, and (usually) homemade stamps instead of trinkets. You can’t take the book with you, but it is neat to look through all of the history in it once you find it. I found one hiking with my boyfriend that had been sitting since the early 2000s and there was pretty art and intriguing notes hidden in it!
