Having Positive Female Support and Friends in Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Siena chapter.

There’s no way to deny that being a girl is hard. Maybe you’re like me, where you’ve always had trouble creating relationships, especially with girls. You constantly hear that girls are so much drama, and guys are so much better to hang out with. So you live your life according to that. You have this constant disconnect with girls. But you soon realize, you just have difficulty with friends. You can’t keep relationships with anyone. But you don’t care, because none of these people have enough significance to your life. But then you get to college, and you realize maybe you were wrong.

All my life I had issues with people. I felt like no one cared about me, so I didn’t care about them. College changed that for me. I started working at Aerie. If you don’t know about Aerie, I suggest checking out their Instagram page. Aerie is all about body positivity, support, and love all around. It was an amazing environment. Everyone who works there, all the “Aerie girls,” are so kind. I loved going to work – there were girls there who weren’t “bitches,” as I had believed they were all my life. There were girls who loved other girls, who supported other girls, who cared about other girls. I’ve made some amazing friends working here.

There’s still one thing, though. I’m in college, and I’m a physics major. The female contact you’re getting is still at a minimum. But one day, I moved into a townhouse with three other girls. And I was a little nervous, because maybe I can go to work with other girls, and hang out with them in small doses, but how is it going to be living with them?

Awesome.

It is absolutely awesome. Every second I spend with these girls, I feel so good. Just being in their presence makes me so happy. I feel constant support and generosity from them. We all share everything with each other, and I mean everything. Nothing in this house is TMI; anything can be talked about. It feels amazing to be able to walk into a house and never feel like I am going to be judged. I never feel like they’re talking behind my back. Everything is out in the open.

Having positive female support and female friends in your life is so important. It was so difficult for me to get through life before college, because I didn’t get that support. I have been able to feel so much better about myself and the people around me, due to having these girls in my life.

But maybe you’re not like me. Maybe you’ve always had this female support. Maybe you’ve always known the benefits of having girl friends. Regardless, whether you’re like me or not, I hope that you always hold onto this feeling, and that you always accept and welcome them, as well as give out and encourage this positive female support in your and everyone else’s life.
