As the year of 2019 comes down to its last several weeks, Halloween is just around the corner. When I look back at my elementary years of dressing up with friends, I think of cavities and chilly nights, begging my mom to stay out past my curfew to get more Kit-Kats and blue raspberry Jolly Ranchers. Though those times were much simpler, I seemed to always brush past the fact that there were many things that could have gone wrong.

Whether your spooky plans consist of going out, walking door-to-door to collect your favorite candies, or just staying in for the night, there are some tricks and treats to make the most of your night.

Spending the night at home while little kids run around sidewalks in costumes is a great way to wind down and spend some time with yourself (or some friends). Besides, a spooky, lowkey night has an abundance of possibilities! It gives a perfect excuse to carve pumpkins to decorate around the house. Watching Halloween movies and trying out some scary-good festive cookies would be a great way to get into the Halloween spirit in the comfort of the indoors. You could also go about the true old fashion way of just staying in the house on Halloween and put on your best costume while passing out treats to the trick-or-treaters!

If you plan on going out on Halloween, it’s important to know the precautions to take before anything. No matter where you end up, your priorities should be solidifying a ride to and from your destination. If you decide to go out with a group of friends, establishing a type of buddy system (as childish as it sounds) is a smart idea to ensure no one gets left behind.

Many cities and towns will have haunted attractions for the public to visit. Though some events can be costly, it’s worth the scare. Some of these haunted attractions include historical monuments, houses, and even interactive corn mazes and hayrides. It’s important to dress accordingly to wherever you may go as well, depending on the type of weather since it hasn’t been so cooperative in the past few years.

If your night consists of guiding trick-or-treaters around neighborhoods, there are many ways to stay aware throughout the night. Since the majority of these sugar-motivated children will be venturing into groups, keeping them all together can be difficult. Walking with the kids to each door in neighborhoods is crucial in making sure they are all supervised.

Depending on how you choose to spend your night, always keep in mind the safety of yourself and those around you. Never forget how fast things may change or get way out of hand. If your plans include going out, it’s important to always check up on one another throughout the night to make sure everyone is okay. Happy Halloween!
