I feel that you can’t go on Instagram without seeing at least one post by the ridiculously talented Melanie Michelle. She’s a Puerto Rican MUA who’s make-up looks are out of this world. She’s an ace with color combinations, amazing at blending, and creative in her process. Lately, she’s on the rise: doing collaborations, constantly posting on Instagram, and definitely on the road to ultimate success. I’ve been an avid follower of her Instagram and Twitter for at least three years, I’m dying to collab, and I’ve finally gotten to ask her a few questions. Trust me, you’re going to want to hear what she has to say.

Hi! I hope you’re well. Please introduce yourself to the readers that don’t know who you are.
Mel Michelle: Mi nombre es Melanie Michelle Rodríguez Rosado y tengo 21 años de edad. Toda mi vida he sido artista y actualmente estoy concentrada en maquillaje para filmación: face/body paint, fantasía, special fx y editorial es lo más que me gusta hacer. También customizo ropa y tennis, diseño tatuajes, hago cuadros y retratos, murales, de todo lo que tenga que ver con arte.
My name is Melanie Michelle Rodríguez Rosado and I’m 21 years old. I’ve been an artist my whole life and I am currently focused on makeup for filming: face/body painting, fantasy, special effects, and editing is the most I like to do. I also customize clothes and tennis, design tattoos, make pictures and portraits, murals. Basically, I do anything that has to do with art.
HC UPR: He estado siguiendo tu Twitter e Instagram por un tiempo. Me encanta su aspecto colorido y las formas creativas en las que emplea su talento. Creo que sus diseños siempre están muy limpios y bien hechos. ¿Cómo empezó todo?
I’ve been following your Twitter and Instagram for a while now. I love your colorful looks and the creative ways in which you employ your talent. I think your designs are always very clean and well done. How did it all start out?
MM: Desde siempre he dibujado y he pintado. Al arte siempre ha sido mi pasión. Desde temprana edad supe que a eso me dedicaría. Aprendí a maquillarme para mi prom de cuarto año, ya que en el de octavo me maquillaron horrible y no confiaba en que me volvieran a tocar la cara. No fue hasta que entré en la Escuela de Artes Plásticas que comencé a maquillarme, para la universidad, todos los días de manera diferente, colorida y notable. Andaba buscando eso que me distingue del resto y esa fue la manera que lo encontré. Seguí practicando y utilizando mi cuerpo en lugar de papeles y canvas (como antes) y me enamoré. Eventualmente tuve mi primera oportunidad cuando participe en un cortometraje. Fue mi primera vez maquillando y cobrando. Ese día supe que era lo que quería hacer para siempre.
I have always drawn and painted. Art has always been my passion and I knew from an early age that I would dedicate myself to that. I learned to put on makeup for the first time for my fourth year prom because eighth grade the makeup I got done was horrible and I didn’t trust anyone to do my makeup again. It wasn’t until I entered the School of Plastic Arts that I started putting on makeup every day in a different, colorful and remarkable way. Through my search for something that would distinguish me from the rest, I ended up falling in love with makeup. I continued practicing and using my body instead of papers and canvases. I eventually had my first opportunity behind the scenes in a short film making up and charging for it. That day I knew that’s what I wanted to do forever.
HC UPR: When did you decide to make a dedicated Instagram account?
¿Cuándo decidiste crear una cuenta de Instagram dedicada?
MM: El año pasado comencé a usar mi plataforma en Instagram de una manera más formal para promocionar mi negocio y mostrar todo lo que sé hacer. Todo ha ocurrido desde entonces SÚPER rápido.
Last year I started using my platform on Instagram in a more formal way to promote my business and show everything I know how to do. Everything has happened since then SUPER fast.
HC UPR: When did you start gaining traction in the Puerto Rican make-up scene?
¿Cuándo comenzaste a ganar tracción en la escena del maquillaje puertorriqueño?
MM: Comencé a ganar reconocimiento el primer día de las protestas del verano de 2019, que hice el arte de la chica pintada con la bandera. Mientras pintaba en vivo, Molusco me entrevistó brevemente y publicó el video rápido en su cuenta. Se comenzó a regar tanto en las redes que las personas ya nos estaban reconociendo en persona y felicitándonos al vernos pasar.
I began to gain recognition on the first day of the protests in the summer of 2019 in which I body-painted a girl with the Puerto Rican flag. While painting live, Molusco interviewed me briefly and posted the video on his account. It began to irrigate so much in the networks that people were already recognizing us in person and congratulating us when they saw us pass.
HC UPR: ¿Cómo te sentiste al trabajar con talentos como Bad Bunny?
How did it feel to work with top talents like Bad Bunny?
MM: Se siente demasiado gratificante trabajar tanto por algo hasta que finalmente se da. Nunca me imaginé lograr conocer y trabajar con artistas. A veces lo doy ya por sentado porque llevo años trabajando en esto y las metas van cambiando, pero siempre me tomo un momento para parar, pensar en todo lo que he logrado y agradecer.
It feels incredibly rewarding to work so hard for something until it finally happens. Meeting artists and working with them is something I never imagined I was going to achieve. Sometimes I take it for granted because I’ve been working on this for years and the goals are changing. I always take a moment to stop, to think about everything I’ve achieved and to give thanks.
HC UPR: ¿Cuál ha sido la experiencia más memorable que has tenido desde que ganaste popularidad?
What has been the most memorable experience you’ve had since you gained popularity?
MM: Sin duda hasta ahora fue el segundo día que llegué a la protesta con las nueve chicas pintadas. Mientras hacíamos nuestro performance frente al tótem (en el cual ellas se arrodillaban en una fila y yo les pintaba un alambre de púas en la boca una a una) una señora se solidarizó con nosotras y nos puso una flor al frente a cada una. Nos dijo que éramos unas guerreras y que nos admiraba. No pudimos contener el llanto.
No doubt until now it was the second day that I arrived at the protest with the nine painted girls. While we were doing our performance in front of the totem (in which they knelt in a row and I painted a barbed wire in their mouths one by one) a lady sympathized with us and put a flower in front of each one. He told us that we were warriors and that she admired us. We could not contain our crying.
HC UPR: En octubre hiciste 31 looks de maquillaje para cada día del mes. ¿Cuáles son tus tres primeros y cuál es tu favorito de todos los tiempos?
This past October you did quite 31 makeup looks for each day of the month. What are your top three and which one is your all-time favorite?
MM: Los tres primeros que hice fueron: Pennywise, de un demonio y de Chewbacca. Mi favorito de todos hasta ahora es mi versión del monstruo de Frankenstein mujer actualizada y moderna. Es el #8 del reto.
The first three I did were: Pennywise and from Chewbacca. My favorite of all so far is my updated and modern version of Frankenstein’s monster (#8 in the challenge!).
HC UPR:
¿Cuál es tu look de maquillaje favorito fuera del tema de Halloween?
What’s your favorite non-halloween make-up look?
MM: Mi maquillaje favorito fuera del tema de Halloween es uno que hice muy colorido con dulces alrededor de mi cara. La fotógrafa y yo literalmente hicimos una piscina de dulces en el piso de la sala de su casa para tomar las fotos.
My favorite makeup outside the theme of Halloween is one that I made very colorful with candy around my face. The photographer and I literally made a pool of sweets on the floor of her living room to take the photos.
HC UPR: ¿Cuánto tiempo, en promedio, toma un look de Halloween?
How long, on average, does a Halloween look take?
MM: Casi todos los looks me toman entre 2-4 horas.
Almost all the looks take me between 2-4 hours.
HC UPR: ¿Usas maquillaje diariamente? Si vas a salir, ¿cuánto tiempo lleva preparar tu maquillaje?
Do you use make-up daily? If you’re going out, how long does it take to get your makeup look ready?
MM: No uso maquillaje diariamente. Solo me maquillo cuando voy a salir y/o para fotos. Rara la vez me hago un “no makeup-makeup look” y cuando lo hago me toma unos 15 minutos.
I don’t wear makeup daily. I only wear makeup when I go out and / or for photos. Rarely do I have a “no makeup-makeup look” and when I do, it takes me about 15 minutes.
HC UPR: ¿Qué otras pasiones tienes?
What other passions do you have?
MM: Aunque ya no saco tanto tiempo para hacerlo, amo dibujar (diseñar tatuajes, hacer retratos), pintar, hacer murales, customizar ropa y zapatos, literalmente todo lo que tenga que ver con arte y manualidades.
Although I don’t take so much time to do it, I love to draw (design tattoos, make portraits), paint, make murals, customize clothes and shoes, literally everything that has to do with art and crafts.
