5 Reasons Why We Need to Go Home for Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Maryland chapter.

1. Being in your hometown

The nostalgia of being in your hometown is unlike any other. It’s so weird seeing your old high school where you thought the world was going to end after a bad grade. Or how about the place you had your first kiss late at night when you thought no one was looking. Your hometown is filled with little memories from your childhood that sometimes you forget about in college.

There’s just this feeling that comes with your hometown —  safety, comfort, anything that makes it so special. At college with constant exams, papers, and parties, we often forget all of the great things we have waiting for us once we go home.

2. Going to your favorite places to eat

Whether you’re from Indonesia and miss your favorite spicy fried rice, or the New Yorker in you wants your favorite thin crust pizza, we all miss comfort food from home. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty tired of the dining halls and route 1 go-to’s. I can’t wait for my family to tell me what’s for dinner, instead of sadly making another cup noodle ramen or indomie (Indonesian instant noodle).

3. Hanging out with friends

Your high school friends aren’t like any other. They’ve seen you in your awkward stage, they were by your side during your rebellious stage and were always there to hear you vent about your crushes. You grew up with these people and college tears you guys apart for nine months of the year. Thanksgiving is the perfect time to catch up with them and again, go to that local bubble tea place with each other!

4. Being with family

Oh, family. The thing Thanksgiving revolves around. Being a college student, I miss my family all the time. I miss how my mom would take care of me when I was sick in high school, watching movies with my dad and all that. Even though Thanksgiving can be tough on account of having to listen to Uncle Hardy dish out his latest political talks or Auntie Irene ask how your grades are, this is a great time to catch up with loved ones.

5. Seeing your dog

Now we get to our coveted number one. If anyone has a dog at home and misses cuddling up with them in bed, or playing fetch with him or her outside, this one’s for you. My dog is my best friend and is pretty much the only one who understands me. If her cute little fluffy face was the first I’d see when I walked through the doors of my house, I would be completely satisfied.
