Selena Gomez’ music is unpredictable, and with the release of Lose You to Love Me fans are moved by the raw emotion she has shared. This song comes years after a short-term relationship with Justin Bieber in 2014. During that time, Gomez had released a song about Bieber called Heart Wants What It Wants. That song blew up the internet, especially after the emotional tribute to Bieber at the Video Music Awards. This pattern has continued with Gomez, with the ironic timing of her release of her latest song. The week prior to the songs release, Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber shared their wedding ceremony that took place in South Carolina on September 30th all over Instagram.

Gomez’ song itself contains blunt lyrics that fans believe are centered around the years of pain she dealt with that paused her career and hurt her future relationships after Bieber. Gomez claimed within the song, “I needed to hate you to love me” and “I needed to lose you to love me” about Bieber. Her career has been up and down since the breakup back in 2014, but so has her health.

Gomez has been hospitalized two times due to emotional breakdowns, and a diagnoses of Lupus lead to her receiving a kidney transplant in 2017. While Lose You to Love Me has held the number one spot on the charts since its release, Gomez has received backlash from Bieber’s wife on social media.

The day the song and music video were released, Baldwin took to her Instagram Story to communicate how she felt about what fans believe was Gomez’ tribute to her husband. Baldwin posted a screenshot of a song called “I’ll Kill You” by Summer Walker, which states, “Tryna come between us, it won’t end up good” and “I’ve been waiting for a love like this.” Gomez responded with a bible quote expressing that God feels for her (Gomez) and that her enemies will not tear her down today or tomorrow.

The following day, Gomez released another song that tied with the release of Lose You to Love Me called Look at Her Now. This song expresses Gomez’ chapter after Bieber as referenced in Lose You to Love Me, “And now the chapter is closed and done” and “And now it’s goodbye, goodbye to us.”

This strong comeback of shedding the years of emotional pain only shines light on a bright future for Gomez in the industry, and the creative content she will create next.
