As we live in a time where television is overrun by several mobile streaming services, one may be overwhelmed with the amount of content. After binge-watching a show, many people feel a sense of “what now” and struggle on what to watch next. Here’s my list of underrated shows that you should consider watching.

As we live in a time where television is overrun by several mobile streaming services, one may be overwhelmed with the amount of content. After binge-watching a show, many people feel a sense of “what now” and struggle on what to watch next. Here’s my list of underrated shows that you should consider watching.

All American

This show follows a football prodigy, Spencer James, who attends South Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles. A football coach, Billy Baker, notices his talent and decides to recruit him to his high school team in Beverly Hills. James deals with the cultural change between his school in Crenshaw and this high-end school in Beverly Hills. The dynamic gets even more complicated as Spencer has to move in with Billy Baker and his family in order to protect his transfer permit. Baker’s son, who happens to be the quarterback, feels that his dad’s attention is less on him and more on Spencer. The show originally aired on the CW but is readily available on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube, and a couple of other streaming services. The show only has two seasons so far.

Glow Up

This Netflix reality TV competition show follows a group of makeup artists who are vying to take their careers to the next level. The show stars renowned British makeup artists Val Garland and Dominic Skinner. Ten contestants compete for a chance to snag a contract that will allow them to work with the world’s top makeup artists. Each artist starts off the day with a makeup challenge and whoever is in the bottom two is at risk of going home. The next day, the artists learn who the bottom two are and each artist must fulfill a creative brief. The bottom two have a chance to get out of the bottom two if they do well enough in the creative brief. At the end of the night, there is a face-off of the bottom two. Whoever wins the face-off stays in the competition while the other gets sent home. So far, there’s only one season.

A Black Lady Sketch Show

This HBO comedy show comes from the first all-black women writer’s room, the first black women director, and the first all-black women cast. I have only watched a couple of episodes as of writing this article, but my first impressions of the show are great. A Black Lady Sketch features a group of women in a post-apocalyptic world and they are the last surviving humans on Earth. As they are hiding out at one of their houses, they speak on many topics, one being what they do with their hair at night. Interjected in between these scenes would be mini sketches, almost like Saturday Night Live.

On My Block

This Netflix show may be on the rise, but I feel the show deserves more hype. Four kids in Los Angeles get a grasp of life and its challenges in South Central Los Angeles. Throughout the first two seasons, Cesar, Ruby, Monse, and Jamal struggle with their relationships as they transition from middle to high school. The fourth season is in the works.

Trinkets

Another Netflix show follows a girl named Elodie who adjusts to a new town and school after losing her mom. Elodie reverts to her comfort zone ーshopliftingー which lands her in Shoplifters Anonymous. There she meets two girls, Tabitha and Moe, and they bound over their shared problem of shoplifting. These three girls become each other’s support systems as they go through the ups and downs of friendship. The show has only one season so far.

Designated Survivor

In this political drama, originally aired on ABC and then picked up by Netflix, a horrible attack happens on the White House during the State of the Union. Much of the administration is killed and the designated survivor happens to be Tom Kirkman ー the Housing and Urban Development secretary. Throughout its three seasons, Tom Kirkman slowly adjusts to the job of president. Kirkman, as an independent politician, attempts to keep the country from dissolving into chaos while fighting the threats that the country regularly faces. Even though the show has been canceled, there are three seasons that you can still binge.

Blindspot

A random body bag appears in the middle of Times Square and a woman crawls out. She’s naked and tatted from head to toe. The FBI had surrounded her at this point and they take her into custody. This NBC show follows an FBI team as they try to figure out the story behind the mysterious tattooed woman, who they named Jane Doe. The mysterious Jane Doe claims to have no recollection of how or why she was in Times Square in a duffle bag. The show has up to four seasons, with the fifth and final one on the way, which you can watch on NBC.

Star

A girl named Star, who fell victim to the foster care system, aspires to become a musician. Star finds her sister, Simone, who was also in the foster care system, and her best friend from Instagram, Alexandra; the trio make their way to Atlanta in order to jumpstart their music career. Upon arriving in Atlanta, the trio finds a support system in a former singer and mother-figure Carlotta. This show follows Star, Alex, and Simone as they navigate the harsh music business. Even though the show has been unfortunately canceled, there are three seasons you can still binge.
