Why Trying Too Hard to be Happy is Making You Sad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Buffalo chapter.

I am in the process of reading this book called The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson (I highly recommend it).  He basically talks about how in order to be happy with yourself and life in general, you need to care less.  In other words, stop being so hard on yourself and stop trying to be “perfect”. Manson touched upon this in his book, and I completely agree: We are so caught up in observing other people’s lives whether that be through social media or just admiring someone we know in real life.  When we do this, we lose sight of our own goals and what we want from life.  Constantly comparing yourself to your favorite Instagrammer, YouTuber, or whatever it may be will only drag you down farther.

According to Manson, in order to achieve “true happiness,” you need to accept the fact that there will be ups and downs throughout your life.  It is the little moments in between where you experience happiness. When you accept that life is not always perfect, you begin to have more moments of joy!  One of the steps toward happiness is singling out what you truly want from life. What are you passionate about? What do you really care about?  How can you devote your time to achieve what you desire?  Start with these questions, and you can work your way up from there.

One of the other points made in this book is about emotions and how they guide us through life.  Manson says, “Emotions evolved for one specific purpose: to help us live and reproduce a little bit better.  That’s it. They’re feedback mechanisms telling us that something is either likely right or likely wrong for us- nothing more, nothing less” (33).  I feel as if a lot of people view negative emotions badly, but they shouldn’t! Negative emotions help us figure out what we need to do in order to better ourselves.  It’s important to look at life as a process, constantly evolving. You just have to make the most of it by prioritizing what’s important to you and going with the motion of life.  If you try to go against the grain, life becomes much more difficult.  If you’re searching for a new book to read, want to get your life back on track, and are wondering what you genuinely want to prioritize in your life, READ THIS BOOK!!!  It may help you in viewing your life from a different perspective, which can make a huge difference.
