How to Survive a Long-Distance Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

When Feb. 14 comes around, the world looks like the colors red, pink, and white threw up everywhere. There is an abundance of chocolates and roses, and those who are in love bask in the glow. At the end of the day, underneath all the frill, Valentine’s Day is a time for couples to cuddle, have some alone time, and enjoy each other’s company. But what about those who aren’t at the same school, or even in the same state? Never fear—here are three simple ways those in a long-distance relationship can celebrate V-day as well.

1.) Set up a time to video call and watch a movie together

With current technology, getting in contact with loved ones is as simple as the press of a button. Set up a time that works for both people—perhaps an evening, or maybe just a few hours on the 14th. Watch a movie or two together on Netflix or Hulu. There are also programs that are accessible, that’ll allow they both of you to sync up your screens! It may not be the exact same as sitting next to each other, but it is a super fun and easy way to spend time as a couple (and to convince your partner to watch a rom-com if that’s what you like).

2.) Send each other a surprise in the mail

What did the previous generation do without phones and computers? Although it is 2020 and we can communicate with our SO instantly, sometimes doing something old school is a nice change of pace. Send your girlfriend/boyfriend a card or a small gift in the mail, and let them be surprised when they receive it. This is a nice way to switch things up and still celebrate V-day together.

3.) Plan an activity for the next time you’re together

The next time you two are together, plan a belated Valentine’s Day activity—whether it be going to get ice cream, getting dinner at your favorite place, or a fun evening at mini-golf. Section off a bit of time when you are reunited, it does not have to be big!

Being in a long-distance relationship is never easy, and it can be hard to not celebrate the normal holidays together. However, with some effort, this Valentine’s Day can still be just as special and make the distance a bit more bearable.
