Mr. Peanut is dead. Let those words sink in. After 104 great years, he was pronounced dead via twitter on January 22. Even though he should have died a century ago because peanuts only live about 4 months, this is a very sad time for the consumer, and advertisement world.
To some, this seems like something so stupid, a cartoon peanut, why would anyone care that it has ‘died.’ He has been a staple mascot for Planters for so long. I have memories of him flying as a balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and also driving along the route in the Nutmobile.
This is obviously a marketing stunt for Planters to sell more peanuts, but it might be a failure as to many it seems Mr. Peanut is more famous than Planters itself. I for one would have to agree with that. How it all went down: Mr. Peanut’s death was shown before the start of the Super Bowl. The Nutmobile veers off a cliff containing Mr. Peanut, Wesley Snipes, and Matt Waslh. The three are left hanging onto a branch on the cliff but it is too heavy and about to break and someone needs to let go or they all die. Mr. Peanut sacrificed his life to save his friends from plummeting to their death.
Another Planters commercial was shown during the third quarter. This commercial showcased Mr. Peanuts’ official demise at his funeral. In attendance was fellow mascots Mr. Clean, and the Kool-Aid Man. Arising from a mound of dirt was shockingly a sprout of a new peanut, who goes by the name of Baby Nut was born. #BabyNut was immediately trending on twitter and there is an official merch shop for all Baby Nut items. Baby characters are popular now we have Baby Nut, Baby Yoda, and Baby Groot. All adorable faces filling our screens.
In conclusion, Mr. Peanut’s legacy will truly live on in the hearts of everyone, and go down as one of the greatest mascots in history. Thank you Mr. Peanut, for putting Planters on the map.
