Hello all of my world-changing sisters! If you are interested in changing the world one baby step at a time but struggling to find ways to be more eco friendly on your college campus, you have come to the right spot! Here are some ways that I have learned to be eco friendly while living on campus in a dorm, as well as when I got my first apartment.
- Reusable Bottles and Other Containers

Okay, I know, duhhh! But this is more than just your water bottles or coffee mugs. Try to get reusable containers that you can put your snacks and other meal prep things, as well. This also includes straws! I know, if you live in a dorm this doesn’t really apply to you, but if you are in an apartment or a dorm that has a kitchen, try making your own meals and packing them. Not only will this help you save money, but it cuts out excessive waste that you might be producing throughout the day.
- Homemade Makeup Wipes

This one is one of my favorites, and it is sooo easy. All you need is a little jar that has a lid. I just use a mason jar. Next, you need washcloths (any size) and the following:
¾ cup of water
½ cup of witch hazel
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
1 tablespoon of mild liquid soap
2 drops of whatever essential oil you want (I use lavender or sometimes tea tree)
Put your washcloth in the jar, and then pour your mixture in, and you are all done! Now, all you have to do is wipe your face and then rinse it with your regular face wash!
- Thrift Shop

So this one probably won’t be much of a transition for you because it is the new, popular thing to do now, but research where there are thrift stores near your campus and go check those out. Try to limit how much you buy new. And if you can’t find anything at the thrift store, try swapping with friends!
- Public Transportation, Biking, and Walking

While on a college campus, it is probably easier to walk or bike to class anyway, but if you are trying to go somewhere off campus or if it is too cold to walk, try carpooling or taking public transportation. Colleges often have shuttles and buses that go all day from different points on campus.
- Reusable Shopping Bags

My last tip is to use reusable shopping bags wherever you go grocery shopping. This will limit the use of plastic bags, as well as limit how many bags you’ll have to carry to your room. If you get two big bags you can squeeze a lot in them; therefore, you will only have to make one trip instead of two or three.
