Realizing What We’ve Taken for Granted

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

These are trying times.

It is in these times, sitting in our houses for days on end, that we think about the things we could be doing.

Want to see your friends? Sorry, we’re on a stay-at-home order. Supposed to meet with your boyfriend for lunch? You can’t, all the restaurants are closed. You want some new clothes? All non-essential businesses are closed.

It’s scary to think about just how serious this situation is and how dangerous it is to just leave the house. People risk their lives by going to the grocery store, something that would have never crossed my mind a month ago. It really is a scary time that we live in, and it’s now that we want to do all of the things that we have taken for granted.

This is a good time for reflection in your life, just to think about the things you miss and the things that we need to cherish more. I want nothing more than to go see my boyfriend, to go on a random Target run with my sisters, or to even get a haircut (I need one desperately). There are a ton of things that I wish I could have or do right now, but it would be foolish for me to do so, considering how many lives are at stake.

We need to remember this moment! It’s vital that we remember that there are things that we don’t think twice about, but we need to. The people who grovel over going to work every day wish they were back in the office. The college kids who dreaded going to their boring classes each day crave the face-to-face instruction that they now receive over the internet. There are teachers out there who want nothing more than to see their students, and there are students who want the same.

While it is hard right now, it’s essential that we think about the positives. By staying home, you’re decreasing the risk of the virus spreading! That’s a win. While you stay at home and stay healthy, you can know that you’re not out there increasing the risk of someone else getting sick. Remember to stay positive during this crisis! We’ll be okay.
