Culture Hunger in Times of Social Distancing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Helsinki chapter.

In times of social distancing you may feel bored simply staying inside. Luckily we have Internet, but is it enough? Do you feel the urge to experience new things? Or do you feel like you have seen it all on Netflix? Now is your chance to open up to new horizons and explore different kinds of cultural activities that you have never heard of or at least never consumed. What could it be?

When was the last time you watched or listened something in a genre that you don’t usually consume? Many times people go for similar things they have always went for. It is safe in a way when you know what you are getting, and you know you will like what you consume. But it does limit you! And we want to be limitless, don’t we?

Here are 5 easy ways to try and find new experiences to satisfy your hunger of culture:

1)    Call your grandmother/father and ask for their favorite movie. Then watch it.

2)    Read a book from a genre you never read. Or if you have already done that, read a book in another language that you understand at some level.

3)    Read a piece of news in a language you don’t understand. Then try to guess what is it about. Finally try to find it in a language you do know. Did you guess even close?

4)    Follow 3 new accounts on Instagram. Is your instagram feed full of females? Follow male accounts. If you only have people from certain area, follow someone from a country you have never been to.

5)    Is there an area of history that you have always wondered about? Do your research now.

Seeing, watching and hearing new things make you have new thoughts. This can make you inspired about life and realize how many different cultures and people there are! Take your time to explore and make it fun. Hopefully you are full now!

I am studying theology in the University of Helsinki. My interests vary from Asian culture to spirituality and self growth. I hope I can share the stories, people and new thoughts about the world and write enjoyable articles.
