Quarantine can be boring. Spice up your social distancing through taking care of yourself and the Earth by making every day Earth Day.

Remain informed on climate issues.

In the wake of COVID- 19, issues on the topic of the health of our planet have become increasingly dynamic. From changing EPA restrictions to an increase in Ozone, the pandemic has brought about many changes to the scope of the environmental crisis. Earth Day isn’t just about temporarily reducing one’s carbon footprint but also about raising awareness for environmental issues. So as to best capture the spirit of Earth Day in quarantine, make an effort to stay informed as the state of our planet continues to shift.

Complete a fun and eco-friendly craft.

An important theme of Earth Day is creating sustainable habits. Capture this goal by staying in shape and helping the environment by making your own weights at home using household objects. Use one or two old milk jugs and fill them with water or sand until they are the desired weight. For more tips on how to get a great home workout while decreasing your waste, check out these instructions on how to make your own weights.

Start a compost.

In the US food waste is a huge problem, with an estimated 30-40% of the food supply going to waste every year. Cut down on your food waste and establish a more eco-friendly routine by starting your own compost. Your commitment to composting can be as big or small as you like, ranging from average food waste like eggshells and coffee grounds to any yard waste you may have laying around. For more detailed instructions about how to start your own compost at home, check out this article.

Plant a garden.

Gardens are truly a gift that keeps on giving, for you and the planet. Not only does gardening reduce your carbon footprint, food waste, and decrease energy costs, it can also offer a mental health boost during a time that is trying for us all. Give yourself a from of ‘horticulture therapy’ and reduce stress and anxiety while working in your garden. To start your garden without leaving the house, order some seeds from Amazon, and get planting.

Encourage your quarantine buddies to do the same.

Earth Day is all about learning how to better take care of our planet, raise awareness, and empower others to do the same. So in the spirit of making Earth Day every day, if you are quarantining alone or with others, encourage your family and friends to do the same, and enjoy the longterm benefits. If you’re feeling bold, start a social media campaign to reach out to others or simply just send a quick picture of your activities to friends and family to get them involved.

Make quarantine productive for both you and the planet by testing out these every day Earth Day hacks.
