5 Documentaries You Must Watch If You’re Into Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Casper Libero chapter.

Fashion is art. Fashion is political. Fashion is revolution. Fashion is expression.

It was in the Middle Age that the clothes started to be seen not only as itens of need, but itens of luxury and status. Since then, the fashion industry has grown more and more every day, and now is one of the biggest in the world, dealing with billions of dollars every year.

If you, like me, are passionate about this unique form of art and political expression, get ready to have your mind blown by 5 documentaries that explore different sides of this universe.

The Secret World of Haute Couture

For a brand to be Haute Couture it needs to be French, invited by the Paris’s Fédrédation de la Haute Couture et la mode and extremely exclusive, with a small client base with private clients worldwide. Pretty much a secret society for only a wealthy selected group of people. Even though it is really hard to get in the “club”, Margy Kinmonth dove in this world, met millionaire customers, world-famous designers such as Karl Lagerfeld and John Galliano, and discovered some do’s and don’ts of the society, and also some secrets.

Casablancas: The Man Who Loved Women

This documentary is an autobiography of John Casablancas, CEO of Elite Model Management, one of the biggest and most important model agencies in the world. Casablancas discovered many super models such as Christie Brinkley, Gisele Bündchen, Stephanie Seymour and Naomi Campbell. It is a fun and light trip through the women’s lover’s life.

Franca: Chaos and Creation

Franca Sozzani, editor in chief of Vogue Italia, has become a strong name for her powerful and controversial editorials, inspired by real and modern themes. Her covers are reminded to this day for challenging beliefs and being ahead of its time. Franca didn’t see the fashion magazine only as a commercial product, but as a way to express art and politics. She faced rejection with many covers like Water & Oil – inspired by the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico – and Cinematic -one of the most impactful, in which she captured domestic violence – but she always stood up and fought for her issues.

Iris

Iris Apfel is a fashionist, interior designer, model and entrepreneur. Known for her unique and extravagant style, Iris can wear a Versace blouse painted by Gianni Versace himself, a coat handmade from a foreign tribe and a thrifted hat, all in the same outfit. The documentary shows her life path, as well as her apartment in New York City and her breathtaking collection of clothes and furniture.

The True Cost

Not only of art and glamour fashion is made. There is this dark side of the industry that is now starting to be shown. Who makes our clothes? What happens before the clothes get to the showcases? This documentary shows the ugly part of this business, all the lives that are affected by the cotton industry, all the people that work under insalubrious conditions and how countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh are affected by the garment industry. It’s not an easy film to watch, but it is a really important one to make us think about how fashion is being consumed and what the fast fashion is doing to our world and to underdeveloped countries.
