Virtual Volunteering: Helping from Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Now that we are getting acclimated to life in quarantine, life is lived from screens. The use of technology has made it easier than ever to connect with people on the internet. For many of us, we have had to learn how to work and study from home. Some of us have even had summer plans such as vacations, jobs, events, etc. postponed or canceled. So, if you are looking for something you can become passionate about, why not look for opportunities to make a difference from the safety of your own home. Ever since I was in high school, community service has always been a big part of my life. However, it was kind of put on hold. In the midst of all that’s going on in the country and the world, there are still so many others that are less fortunate than I am and could use a helping hand. Here are some opportunities to help out within your community and volunteer virtually, links included.

Be My Eyes

“Be My Eyes” is a free app where blind and visually impaired people can be linked with sighted people to help them through a video call. With the assistance of a live video call, volunteers can have a direct impact helping out the visually impaired carry out certain activities.Users may need help with anything from distinguishing colors, reading instructions, etc.

Crisis Text Line

As a volunteer for the “Crisis Text Line,” you can help the organization provide support for those in need. Crisis counselors respond to people in crisis. The only requirements: you must be at least 18 years old and able to commit at least four hours per week. If you can meet those requirements, you will be available for free training.

DoSomething.org

“Do Something” is an organization dedicated to providing more social awareness and raising the next generation of civic-minded people who are committed to making change. The website covers campaigns on a variety of causes such as LGBTQ+, education, gun violence, mental health, etc. Have a cause for social justice/advocacy that you’re passionate about? Want to change the world? Then check out their website for how to get involved.
