With the end of summer and the beginning of fall comes a lovely shift in weather. You may be thinking that cold weather means soups and hot foods, but if you’re like me then you definitely won’t let ice cream go. I believe that in 100 degrees and in 40 degrees, ice cream is always a good option — except maybe if you’re lactose intolerant. Here’s a couple local places that I have tried on my journey as an ice cream foodie.

Frozen Gold.

This place is new in the Westport area and a good place for some soft serve ice cream. I like it because in addition to the aesthetically pleasing look of the ice cream, it also has nice decor. While there aren’t too many options to choose from here, each option is unique and I would definitely give it a try.

Ice Cream Bae.

You might miss it at first because it’s inside of Made in KC Marketplace, but you won’t regret your choice of ice cream here. The first time I went, I got a cinnamon roll flavored shake that had actual cinnamon rolls inside. I liked this choice and I’d probably get it again if they didn’t have so many other unique flavors to try. Another nice thing about this place is its convenient location on the plaza. It’s perfect for getting ice cream and taking a nice walk around with a friend.

Betty Rae’s.

For me, Betty Rae’s is a staple and a go-to when I’m looking for a simple flavor. They have flavors that change from time to time and some flavors that are more permanent. The pricing is pretty decent for what you get and you have the option of grabbing one of their homemade waffle cones. I’ve never left this place without sampling at least three of their flavors.

Andy’s.

Honestly you can’t say you’ve had the true college experience if you haven’t made a late night Andy’s run. With its popularity, of course, comes long lines. I personally think this place is a bit over my price range, but the experience is worth it if you get the chance. They have so many different options from sundaes to cones to shakes, so if you’re looking for a bit more variety as opposed to one standard option, then this is your place.

Next time you need a study break, fresh air or have a sweet tooth, go get some ice cream. With the pandemic, most, if not all of these places have take-out options, so you won’t end up eating in the store. Whether by yourself or with a group of friends, this delectable treat can make your day instantly better. Regardless of the weather, make sure to treat yourself.
