I Tried a Capsule Wardrobe, Here’s How it Went

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at CWU chapter.

Fast fashion has made it all too easy for me to justify having a ton of clothes, which is why I decided to try a capsule wardrobe for a week! A capsule wardrobe is a simplified collection of clothing pieces that can be styled interchangeably, creating a more minimalistic feel, as well as reducing waste. Here’s what I included in mine:

  • Two pairs of jeans
  • One pair of black trousers
  • One skirt
  • One black turtleneck
  • One white T-shirt
  • One bralette
  • One jacket
  • Two pairs of shoes

Monday

I woke up in a very extra mood, so I styled this adorable midi skirt with a black bralette top and my white Nike Air Jesters. You can find the exact pair I have here, or a similar style here.

Tuesday

I only had a few errands, so I paired the same bralette with a pair of black washed Levi’s jeans, a cream denim jacket from H&M, and my Nike Blazer Mid “77 Vintages. This look was perfect for running around town!

Wednesday

It was a bit chilly out, so I opted for a black turtleneck with a pair of light wash Levi’s jeans and my Blazers. I didn’t have much to do in this look besides attend online lectures, but I definitely appreciated having an outfit basically picked out for me when I woke up, otherwise, I would have likely stayed in my pajamas all day.

Thursday

I had a coffee date with my mom, so I decided to wear this white Guess tee over my turtleneck with my black Levi’s, paired with my Jesters. I really love this look and I’m so excited to finally wear this style again now that the weather is turning.

Friday

Finally, I wanted a chill outfit to hang around the house in, so I paired my white tee with these black tapered ankle-length trousers and my white Nike Air Jesters. Again, this outfit had me feeling way more dressed up than if I had worn my usual attire of leggings and a hoodie, but with just as much comfort.

Final Thoughts

After going a whole week styling the same few pieces, I truly have a much better understanding of how much wear I can get out of my clothes. By Thursday, I had almost forgotten about the rest of my closet and felt like I could’ve made many more combinations with the pieces I chose. It’s become so easy and normal for people to consume new clothes, and I personally would consider myself a bit of a shopaholic. Before this week I constantly felt like I had a lot of clothes but never anything to wear. If you’re struggling with the same thing, definitely try this out and see what you can come up with, you may just surprise yourself!
